Creating your first Matter

A Matter is where everything for one piece of work lives — documents, chat, drafts, and the finished output. Here's how to set one up.

1

Click "Create new matter"

In the left-hand Matters panel, type a name into the field at the top (e.g. "Smith Development Application") and click Go, or use the "Create your first matter" prompt if your workspace is empty.

2

Fill in the client details

Add the client name (required), plus address and contact if you have them. These appear on exported letters and in the Matter Summary.

3

Pick a template (optional)

If your firm has saved templates, pick one to pre-fill the description and AI instructions — or create a custom template on the spot if this is a recurring matter type.

4

Set matter instructions (optional)

Anything you type here is applied to every AI response in this matter — e.g. "Always cite the Central Coast LEP 2022 where relevant, use a cautious tone on heritage issues."

5

Click "Create Matter"

Your new matter opens straight into Matter Chat, ready for you to start uploading documents.

Tip: the Class 1 Matter and Letters toggles pre-create a standard folder structure for conveyancing/planning-law matters — leave them off if you'd rather start with an empty matter and build your own folders.
